Storytime: The One Thing About Maya's New Boo
The ladies were impressed. An attractive, single man with a good paying job, no kids and his hairline intact? Talk about rarity.
Maya worked as a host at one of LA’s most sought out restaurants where reservations were harder to get than auditions. On any given shift, she saw a healthy amount of attractive, sophisticated men who more often than not would hit on her, or at the very least slip her an extra twenty that stirred envy amongst her male co-workers.
It was a great job: working nights only, leaving ample time for acting gigs and frolicking during the day, with Fridays and Sundays off. She made enough to pay her rent and then some, and subsided her life with bookings and extra cash she got from being pretty.
It became an even better job when six weeks ago, she met the man she was now steadily dating. His name was Freddy, he worked in finance, and he was FINE.
“Any red flags?” Lia asked at the table.
We were at Alta for Sunday brunch and were all excited to hear about Maya’s potential new boo.
“So far, none.” Maya said, as she sipped on her Kendrick-inspired bloody mary.
“How tall is he?” Lia responded -
“Taller than me”
“Kids?”
“None.”
“He’s bald isn’t he?”
“Geesh Lia, 21 questions much?” Gene responds,
“What? Nothing’s wrong with being bald. Most men these days are”
“Well he’s bald by choice,” Maya smirks.
“What do you mean by choice?”
“He just shaves it low but his hair still grows back”
“Oh so he’s intentionally bald? See that’s hot” Claude says.
The ladies were impressed. An attractive, single man with a good paying job, no kids and his hairline intact? Talk about rarity.
“Who cares about looks anyways, what matters most is how he treats you” I say, even though we all know looks matter.
“Well so far he’s great. He actually sent me money to pay for our first round of drinks, ladies!”
She holds up her drink to start a cheers.
“Girl. I’m so happy for you. Especially after that whole roommate situation”
“GIRL!”
The roommate situation was one Maya preferred to pretend never happened. It lasted all of two weeks and ended for good when Maya moved into her own place.
“He’s white isn’t he?”
The group collectively looks at Lia.
Since the moment Maya and Lia met, there was always something. It was like some type of [one-sided] competition the two had. Maybe it’s because Lia worked in corporate and always despised Maya’s easy approach to life, something Lia struggled to embrace. It was an underlying envy that Maya experienced with most people, but this was for the first time she felt it so strongly with her so-called friend.
“Excuse me but my Black man pays all the bills! Race ain’t got nothing to do with it” Gene responds proudly.
Lia gives Maya a LOOK; she was waiting.
It was true. He was white; and not just any white, Irish white, which is actually less white than most caucasian whites but still white enough to be racist during their initial immigration to the Americas.
Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror. She had a few drinks in her system. Her phone buzzed and it was him - Freddy her white Irish boo. For some reason Lia’s annoying comments about dating a white man got to her.
“You sure he’s not a skinhead?” Lia asked before Maya dismissed herself to the bathroom, “shaving his damn head and all.”
It was an unsettling comment. One Maya obviously already considered from the very first time she saw Freddy and felt a feeling in her stomach that felt different, special.
It was why she hadn’t shown any of her friends photos of him yet despite curiosities. Was she really going to date this white man?
She looked at her phone -
It was an Apple Pay in the amount of $150.
“Hey beautiful. In case you wanted another round”
Right now, and until further notice, the answer was definitely ✨yes✨
